“Neal Auch confronts us with an unsettling idea: there is beauty in horror.” —Agustina Bazterrica, author of Tender is the Flesh
I’m an artist, mostly interested in revisiting the philosophy of 17th century Dutch still life with a modern horror-inspired aesthetic. My art has been exhibited in galleries, including The Shadowood Collective’s Betwixt and Between the Monsters we Dream, alongside notable figures such as Clive Barker and Anita Kunz. My clients include Paramount+, Weirdpunk Books, and Grindhouse Press.
I’m also an author. I have had horror stories published in Nightmare Magazine, Three-Lobed Burning Eye Magazine, The Skull and Lauren Magazine, and elsewhere. My nonfiction essays have been published in Nightmare Magazine, The Canadian Medical Association Journal, Seize the Press Magazine, and The Deadlands Magazine.
My first book, Disassembly of the Pig, was released in 2024. It’s unorthodox blend of photography, storytelling, and well-researched nonfiction was praised by a number of horror icons, including Augustina Bazterrica (author of Tender in the Flesh), Matthew Stokoe (author of Cows), Donyae Coles (author of Midnight Rooms), Sam Richard (author of To Wallow in Ash & Other Sorrows), and Mark Riddick (cover artist of all your favourite death metal albums).
My second book, All is Vanity, is scheduled for release in early 2025. That book will compile nearly a decade’s worth of my still life art alongside an in-depth exploration of both the art history and philosophy which underpin my creative output.
You can learn more about my work at my blog, or by subscribing to my newsletter where I send out new images, stories, and essays on a regular schedule of “sometimes.”
