Strange Flowers: Fruit of the Elder Gods
{…an excerpt from Dr. Sieber’s Illustrated Field Guide to the Strange Flowers of our dark world…}
Fruit of the Elder Gods (Malus ghatanothoa)
Certain ancient scrolls describe, in considerable detail, an unusual plant of divine lineage. According to myth, the fruit of this plant was forbidden to touch mortal lips — this was the exclusive food of the elder gods.
Using the most sophisticated techniques of gene splicing, genetic engineering, and selective breeding, disciples of this ancient religious tradition sought to precisely reproduce the plant described in their holy book. After years of secretive scientific research, there now grows in the Dunwich Monastery a strange plant with claw-like blossoms, born heavenwards on stems of cartilage and bone.
Amongst the faithful, there are those who claim that the scientists and theologians have failed miserably in their efforts; they maintain that the Malus ghatanothoa is an abomination that must be destroyed. Others insist that the monstrous things growing in the Dunwich Monastery are, indeed, a faithful enactment of the wisdom of the elder gods.
